Menzo Brazien was taken into police custody Tuesday this week after Shaneque Thomas, aged 21, was shot by her 3-year-old child from the backseat of the car. Menzo was arrested and charged with child endangerment after it was discovered he had left a handgun loaded and unattended on the backseat of his vehicle with a 1-year-old and 3-year-old child within reach of the weapon.

Shaneque Thomas was sitting in the front seat of the car outside the Plato’s Closet strip mall in Indiana when the toddler discharged the gun three times, striking her between her chest and her shoulder. Menzo was trying on clothes at the thrift store at the time. A witness who saw the shooting ran into the nearby store crying,
“There was blood flowing all from her stomach; just coming out like water, like a faucet, and I screamed 'Someone call 911’.” An employee at the scene also told reporters that Menzo ran outside “bawling his eyes out” while wrapping his jacket around Shaneque in an attempt to stop the bleeding while paramedics arrived.
An employee of the strip mall then came and took the two toddlers out of the car and brought them into the store where they tried to calm the children down. The employee told of how the child was “just looking at me, caressing my neck. Just holding on to me. I was telling her it was OK” while wearing a blood covered jacket.

“She had no idea what she had done and she was very scared,” said a policeman who was present at the time, speaking about the three-year-old. Meanwhile the local police chief told reporters,
“A loaded weapon with children in the back seat: real careless act. I hope she survives the gunshot wound,” when talking about Menzo and Shaneque.
At the moment Shaneque has been rushed to hospital and is still undergoing treatment where her condition is critical but stable. It is unknown if she will recover at this point in time, nor is it known if the woman’s unborn child is safe.
