Mila Kunis and Macaulay Culkin, who dated for over nine years until their split in 2011, managed to keep their relationship out of the limelight for most of their time together. Since then the pair have moved on, with Mila now dating fellow That 70’s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher in an adorable mirroring of their on-screen roles. Meanwhile Macaulay just seems to be doing his own thing and he looks like he’s having a whale of a time doing it too, which is great.

But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to know what happened between them. A happy ending doesn’t mean much without the conflict that came before it, right?
So… what was the conflict? What caused them to split?
Well the good news for us nosey b*stards is that Mila has opened up about the relationship and offered some clarification. It’s not a lot, but it’s something.
“I had a horrible, horrible breakup. No, I fucked up. I was an asshole in my twenties and I’ll be the first to admit it. And that’s something that took me a long time to come out and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what, I was a dick,’ and accept it and I own it.
“And it’s fucked up what I did. It’s fucked up what I did, and it’s fucked up how I did it. When I got to be single I said, I just need to figure myself out. I genuinely need to know why I did what I did and, like, regroup myself as a human being.”
She later added: “You know, it’s been so long, like I feel like enough time has gone by. I think enough mutual friends have been like … everybody kind of forgave everybody for what went down. At 35, I could look back and be like, ‘I was 20’.”
Interestingly Mila spoke about Macaulay during 2016 and spoke about how his fame impacted their relationship:
“He was huge. You couldn’t walk down the street with him. He always had this weird attraction, like fans just screamed when they saw him! ‘They didn’t know how to react. It wasn’t like a normal response to a celebrity. Fans responded in a very abnormal way to him.’”
So… what we know for sure is that Mila holds herself, at least partly, responsible and that she previously cited Macaulay’s fame when discussing the relationship. Does that mean she became jealous of his renown and overreacted? Or maybe it was something else? Who knows. At least they’re both happy now.
