Rodney James Alpaca is a serial killer often compared to Ted Bundy. He has been convicted of eight murders but it is believed his victim count may be as high as 130. He has been described as a “killing machine” who toyed with his victims for hours, using rape and strangulation, before finally killing them.
At the time of his arrest he was found with thousands of photos of young women and boys and police believe that many of those photographed may have been victims of either rape or murder. Police released 120 of the photos to the public, but could not release the rest because they were too sexual, and immediately saw dozens of women and families come forward saying they were either the subjects and had indeed been attacked, or they recognised the subjects as family members who had gone missing years before.
How many people Rodney killed remains a mystery, and his murders span decades. But there’s another profoundly strange aspect to Rodney’s history. In 1978 he went on live TV as part of The Dating Game where he won a date with bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw and she refused to even go on the date with him. Other contestants disliked him, describing his as “strange” and “creepy”. But even better, you can just watch his full performance on Youtube and it is… extremely weird.
Throughout the interview Rodney gives strange and uncomfortable responses that might have seemed odd at the time but which, in hindsight, are terrifying. By this time in his life Rodney had already raped and killed three people, one of whom was an 8-year-old child. Poor Cheryl probably doesn’t realise just how close she came to danger when she avoided this guy, and you can see her realise just how creepy she is as at 4.05 when she finally sees his face and it sinks in just how much of a creep he is.
Experts have even suggested that Bradshaw’s refusal to date Rodney played a role in him killing two other people shortly afterwards. Pat Brown, a criminal profiler, once said,
“One wonders what that did in his mind,” Brown said. “That is something he would not take too well. [Serial killers] don't understand the rejection. They think that something is wrong with that girl: 'She played me. She played hard to get.'”
This is a pretty macabre story! And it’s a frightening reminder that sometimes you should stick with your gut instinct just like Cheryl, who avoided a date with a violent sexual sadist and rightfully asserted her right to stay the hell away from him!
