A violent predator is awaiting sentencing for an unspeakable crime against a South Carolina family. Thomas Evans Jnr, 37, chose his victim at random after following her to watch her drop her children off at school in Charleston, SC. He is said to have followed the mother home before beating her severely, slamming her head against a wooden floor and raping her before abducting her four year old daughter and going on the run for two weeks. Evans kidnapped the child and drove hundreds of miles across three states with her until they were finally found sleeping in his car near a railroad track almost two weeks later, on February 14. The girl is understood to have been sexually assaulted.
The abduction sparked a huge missing person's search across America for fourteen days while the terrified mother had to wait for any news about her daughter. When they were found, Evans was apparently drunk and the girl was wearing adult clothing after being changed out of her child's outfit. US Attorney Beth Drake has filed charges against Evans including Kidnapping Involving a Person Under the Age of 18, Transportation of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity and Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Person under the age of Twelve. At the time of the rape and abduction, Evans had just been released from prison and has a long criminal history for offences including armed robbery. He faces life in prison for his crimes.
