Claire Morgan, aged 35, from Bridgend, South Wales has been jailed after making a false rape claim against a father-of-three who worked as a taxi driver.
Claire Morgan made the claim after the man gave her a taxi ride that lasted 5 minutes and during which not a word was spoken. Afterwards Claire went through what can only be described as an elaborate rouse in the attempt to convince police that she had been raped.
First, she phoned the police and told them that the man had taken her to an adventure park and sexually assaulted her by groping her breasts and placing his hands down the front of her trousers and into her underwear. As a result of this initial claim the man was arrested by police and placed in custody for 6 hours.
Afterwards Claire then phoned Crimestoppers and pretended to be an anonymous tipster who witnessed the attack. Then Claire created a fake Facebook account, pretended to be a different woman named Sarah Jenkins, and responded to a police appeal made over Facebook saying she also had witnessed the attack.
“Her allegations also had a devastating impact on the man she accused. I hope she uses her time in prison to reflect on the harm her lies have caused.” 'Serial liar' Claire Morgan falsely claiming taxi driver sexually assaulted her https://t.co/DfUX1tlQzu— Ann-Mari Maukonen 🇫🇮 (@annmarimaukonen) June 13, 2018
But, if anything, the harder Claire tried to make it look real the more it became clear that she was lying. The Crimestoppers telephone handler noted that the call she received was strange, and that it was abnormally detailed. The Facebook account of Sarah Jenkins was easily revealed to be a fake. And Claire was caught out giving different accounts of the crime. To some friends she said that her belt was too tight for him to fit his hands down her trousers. To others she said that she had kicked out the taxi window.
When police finally found CCTV footage that showed the taxi ride it became obvious that Claire was not telling the truth. The prosecutor told the court,
“Police realised that the account the defendant had given was not in line with the CCTV.”
Afterwards police took Claire’s clothes and were unable to find any trace of the man’s DNA. Eventually the charges against the man were dropped and the man, who also worked as a treasurer at his local mosque, was proven innocent. He told press about the relief he felt, saying,
“It felt good finally being able to tell my wife, family and friends that I was a completely innocent man.”
But now further details have also come out about Claire’s prolific history as a liar. She falsely claimed her daughter was in Manchester during last year’s bombing. She claimed she had suffered a miscarriage in prison. And also claimed her brother had died after being run over by a drunk driver. All of these were blatant lies.
Claire, who has revealed a diagnosis of a personality disorder, has since pleaded guilty to trying to pervert the course of justice.
