Wrestling's golden couple, John Cena and Nikki Bella, shocked the world in April by calling off their engagement after six years of dating. It was a huge step for the wrestling titan to propose to the WWE Diva, after swearing off marriage after divorcing ex-wife Elizabeth Huberdeau in 2012, and Nikki was over the moon after dropping hints for years. She has always said that John was the love of her life, and she wanted to marry and have children with him, but John took a lot of convincing before finally biting the bullet and proposing live at Wrestlemania in front of tens of thousands of WWE fans. Bella had believed that because Cena changed his mind on marriage with time, he might also change his mind on having kids but he remained steadfast and refused to discuss it even just a month before their wedding was scheduled.
Charted through Nikki's TV show on E!, Total Bellas, Nikki and her twin sister Brie talked at length about the upcoming nuptials which John wanted to be held in his hometown of Newbury, Mass. Nikki wanted to get married in Napa Valley in her home state of California, but was so scared of John changing his mind on the ceremony altogether she refused to bring it up with him. The worries grew in her mind and compounded when her sister Brie, who is married to WWE star Bryan Daniels (Daniel Bryan), asked her how the birth of her new child was affecting Nikki's broodiness. Initially downplaying how upset she was, Nikki soldiered on but ended up calling things off with John when she realised she would never be happy if she didn't have children.
In next week's episode of Total Bellas, Nikki and John can be seen sitting down over dinner and talking about their issues. Cena reveals that he's worried having children will just act as a sticking plaster over bigger issues the couple have lying under the surface, but Bella assures him the only problem she had with their relationship was the fact he could never see himself having kids:
"I’m talking to you tonight and I’m trying to ask all these difficult questions because I don't know if you're just upset that you're not going to be a mom, or you have fallen out of love with me. Because it kind of feels like both. There's no way I can interpret your actions over the past three months as anything different."
"I just want to be a mom, to constantly wake up and look at this beautiful thing that I made. I feel like there's so much more I want to do with you and experience with you. It's just wanting to be a mom and knowing you will not be a dad."
Eventually, John caves and agrees to have children with his fellow wrestling star. For the right reasons? Maybe not, but perhaps with time Cena might realise it was what he wanted after all.
